"After work, as I drove home the Interstate started out fast, then reverted to bumper to bumper. The 25-minute trip took 1-½ hours. When I arrived home, I heard loud yowling. My neighbor, Richard, also heard the yowling, and came to see what was going on.
We walked around my Range Rover. The caterwauling was emanating from somewhere inside it. Richard opened the hood; thankfully, we only found an engine. The yowling continued, so he looked underneath the truck, and saw a cat sitting inside a space near the front tire and the axel! He pulled the cat out, amazingly uninjured!
He surmised, "The cat must have jumped up after you pulled into the driveway." But I told him that I’d heard the howling on the drive and believed the cat traveled from my office parking lot.
Richard declared, "It's impossible given the distance, the high freeway speed, then the stop-and-go traffic for it to have hitched a ride that far!"
Neither of us could believe it was paws-ible. The cat was wearing a collar with no ID tag.
Optimistic Richard walked around our neighborhood with the cat, asking if anyone recognized it. No one did. I have two adult male cats, so Richard took the cat home while we decided what to do with the furry stow-a-way. He turned the cat's collar over and found a phone number!
We excitedly phoned the number. The woman said that she lived next to my office building! YES! The cat had ridden underneath the car the entire trip!
The single mother said, "I have a newborn, can't afford to keep the cat, and I've been looking for a home for him. I don't want him back."
So the kitty spent the night with Richard, and the next morning a couple came to visit Richard. They fell in love with the four-footed traveler and gave him the home he deserves.
My two kitties, Captain Jack Sparrow and Rowdy, are Maine Coons, known as the "gentle giants" in the cat world. The average cat measures 10" from the floor to its back; Maine Coons like Rowdy measure a whopping 16-1/2"!
Maine Coons are intelligent, sweet and magnificent animals. They are observant and don't miss a thing. When someone gifted me a Parrot tulip, I knew that tulips are poisonous to cats, so I put the plant on top of the bookcase until it could be planted outside.
Captain Jack was cat-napping in another room when the flower arrived. I looked up just in time to see him on the bookcase reaching for the tulip!
Another amazing cat story happened when my husband and I moved into an apartment and could not take Frosty, our white Persian. Frosty had an unmistakable identifying grey hairs between her eyes. My aunt took Frosty. Then, when my husband and I moved onto the Air Force Base, we excitedly went to get Frosty. But, as we put Frosty into the car, she jumped out, and disappeared into the tall grass field. I was devastated.
A year later, I was home and heard a knock on the screen door. I opened it; no one was there. Then again another knock. I opened the door, and there sat Frosty! She had been pushing on the screen on the door with her paw creating a knocking sound!
Unbelievable! She had never been to this apartment; it was miles from my Aunt's home. How did she know I was here? She looked groomed and well fed. I let her in and saw that she had been nursing kittens.
Frosty spent the day with us and at 4:30 she wanted out. I opened the door, and she walked out a little way, then turned, looked over her shoulder at me, then walked through a hole in the fence and disappeared.
I never saw her again. It was like she came back to say, 'Good-bye!’, to let me know she was having a good life, and not to worry about her. I never could figure out how she found me!"
