Angel Scribe’s two indoor cats, the Fluffingtons, spend hours watching ‘Bird TV’ from their window hammocks.
Birds stimulate their mental health and are instinctual entertainment. Suet and bird seed attract the birds.
It is a good arrangement until a bird strikes a window. Birds hitting residential and high-rise windows are a leading cause of their death. Each year, 100 million to 1
billion birds are killed by window collisions in the United States.
This is explained by biologist Kendra, who owns Mount Shasta’s wild bird shop, Raven Tree, said, “Fall and spring migration is the worst time for window strikes when an increased number of birds fly through our areas. The lower sun angles create a mirror reflection on windows. Birds who fly into windows often die later due to sustained neurological and internal injuries. Place injured birds in a quiet dark place and take
them to a wildlife/bird rehab as soon as possible.”
A beautiful solution to the problem of bird strikes evolved when Kendra’s business partner, Eileen (who happens to be a designer) sprang to action when a bird hit her window.
She cut prismatic cling material and placed it as a warning on the window. She knew that the reflection would break the mirrored effect on the glass. When Kendra saw the spontaneous window sticker, being a biologist, she knew this was
a better product than the ones already on the market. Birds see color better than humans and the slightest of color makes them veer away from the windows.
She saw the potential for this to become something big.
Dedicated to saving as many birds as possible, they created Window Gems.
Their clear decals do not block the view and the prismatic texture reflects beautiful prisms into your home. Together, they have created designs of
cats, dogs, dragons, birds, butterflies, snowflakes, stars etc.. They placed their ‘invention’ on ETSY, an online market, and when Covid hit, there was a silver lining for the bird-team. People were home more, observing birds colliding with their windows, increasing the desire to prevent this from happening.
People paw-chased Window Gems online and their business exploded. Kendra added, "We have filled a growing niche and need. Our wholesale customers include 350+
shops throughout the United States and Canada. (Locate a shop near you for their decals: www.windowgems.com)
Now Window Gems is a full-time bird-saving business. Their company employs 15 part time mothers with young children, wives of disabled spouses, and fantastic people who think outside the box. Sometimes their teenage children pitch in as
well.
Kendra and Eileen, mothers, business owners, entrepreneurs, two kindhearted ladies with a small idea and good intentions have to date saved thousands if not millions of birds a day in the USA alone! Customer reviews are as sparkling as the window prisms that decorate their homes from the window gems.
Kendra’s pugs, Ollie and Zia, assist the company by joyfully greeting delivery drivers. The dogs jump up into their trucks for a tasty treat as a reward
for welcoming them.
“Ollie and Zia are best friends with the drivers because we receive so many shipments,” said Kendra. "The dogs run back and forth supervising each delivery and then they spend the rest of their day snoozing in my office while I work.”
Eileen's two cats are also helpful in the Window Gem studio. "They walk across my desk while I'm working, sit on my lap while I'm designing and blink at me when they are feeling adorable. I love my
job!"
This explains why Angel Scribe’s Fluffington cats' beautiful decals are saving birds' lives!
