Misty Moore was born passionate about animals, so in 2016 she opened Welcome Home Animal Sanctuary in Creswell, Oregon as a haven for rescued farm animals.
“The animals in our care are ambassadors for all farmed animals,” said Misty. “Their stories of survival impact visitors and are a testament to hope and healing. Our dedicated volunteers are a vital part of our rescue community. They show genuine love
to all of the residents and are an important part of helping them overcome their fear of humans.”
How dedicated are Misty and her husband, Robert? “Donations only cover ⅓ of our $3,000 monthly costs.” said Misty. “The rest is covered by our personal income.”
The current Guinness Book of World Records world’s tallest cow is 6 feet 1 inches at his withers. Romeo, a resident of Welcome Home, is 6 feet, 3 ⅜ inches at his withers! He’s clearly a winner! They’ve
contacted Guinness to affirm that Romeo is indeed the tallest cow. Their application has been accepted, so they are closer to having him confirmed as the world's tallest.
“Romeo is a gentle giant who was rescued at ten-days-old,” said Misty. “He was confined to a veal crate, the size of a doghouse. His rescuer brought him to our Sanctuary. This steer is a lover, handsome, intelligent and sensitive, thus his name, Romeo. As an adult he consumes 100 pounds of hay a day. He also
loves grain, fruits and veggies and is looking for sponsors to keep his ‘snackies’ coming!
Romeo is a big boy, but out of all our cows he is the biggest baby! Routine treatments such as fly spray or vaccines send him running for the hills! There is no chute big enough to hold him, creating challenging situations! He is highly intelligent, so when he needs meds, we hide them in his treats because if he gets a whiff of them, or even suspects something is different, he stubbornly
refuses to cooperate.
He also hates getting wet! If it’s raining, he refuses to leave his shelter, even to drink. He stands at the barn’s edge and drinks the rainwater from the sky so that he doesn’t have to walk to the water trough.
Romeo knows his name and comes when he is called. He also loves to play. He has no idea how big he is and sometimes tries to jump on us when he’s excited! My husband nicknamed Romeo “#1” because he has a “1” on him. We never
imagined he would be such a special “1”, possibly being the tallest cow in the world!”

Cow Facts and Tips
“Cows display emotions similar to humans,” said Misty. “They love to play. If they’ve been cooped up because of bad weather, they run, prance and jump with joy once let
out of their stalls. Their intelligence has been overlooked. They are curious animals who love their babies, and they choose their BFFs (Bovine Forever Friends)."
Cows learn and teach each other. Their decisions are based on compassion and altruism. Caution: They have the mind of an elephant and remember who was nice to them and who wasn’t! They recognize faces, so be kind to the ones you meet because they can hold grudges for years!
Monthly sponsors are
