Have you ever asked yourself, “How does a simple gesture go so wrong so fast?”
Last week, the most awkward-hiss-terical thing happened. I am willing to share with you as you could probably use a good laugh.
My friend, Allison, was briefly care taking her 88-year-old mother in a NO PET building and had to take her in-door Persian cat, Parker.
She mentioned that Parker needed some grass to chew for his digestion, and to help him eliminate hairballs, so I offered to pick some up at the pet store.
Once purr-chased, while walking back to the car, I dialed her to ask if she was home to drop off the grass. Allison uses her mother’s speaker phone and it’s loud, so when she answered, “Hello”, I whispered, “I have the grass.”
It was hard to hear her with the busy traffic, and it must have been hard for her to hear me because she responded, “Pardon me?”
So, I again whispered, “I have the grass.”
Then this total stranger, in her 70's (making her a child of the hippy era) responded, “Pardon me?” and she sounded audibly alarmed.
“Oh! No!” I thought. It was a wrong number! Then I realized she sounded panicked thinking that the mentioned “grass” was marijuana!
I laughed and explained her number was one off from my friend’s and that the “grass” in question was cat grass for my friend’s ‘secret’ cat. She laughed too. Talk about an awkward moment!
When I told my friends about the wrong phone call, one said, “Too bad Allison had not also asked you to buy her some Coca-Cola. Then you could have whispered, ‘I have your grass and coke’.”
Another friend in bored isolation laughed and said, “I might randomly phone a number and whisper, ‘I have grass’ to alleviate their boredom too.”
After dropping the “grass” off to the awaiting cat, Parker, his mother phoned and said, “Parker loves the grass. He looks like a farmer in the field. He ate some and one piece is sticking out of the side of his mouth like a blade of wheat.”
Who ever thought a cat-act of kindness would make so many people laugh!
