Rachel's dogs Scout and Bridget are rescued dogs; one is from a Scottie rescue organization and the other was discovered on craigslist. You never know what is happening behind the walls of the homes you drive by in town. Kind-hearted Rachel created North Star for Rescued Animals to help pets find their way home from her home.

TALES

A life-changing moment came when Rachel asked herself, "What would be my perfect hobby?"

Shortly after her beloved 15-year-old Scottish Terrier, Buddy, passed away, she learned that there are rescue groups for every breed of dog and cat.

Rachel said, "I adopted Bridget from a Scottish Terrier rescue group.  Later, I volunteered with their organization and fostered two Scottie puppies from Saving Grace Animal Shelter in Winston, Oregon, until they  were placed in loving homes."

With her love of pets and desire to help make a difference in their lives, Rachel had the answer to her question about "my perfect hobby, along with a light bulb moment.

"Our community needed help coordinating lost-and-found pets, so I started there," explained  Rachel. She went to her computer and created NorthStarRescue.com, a non-profit community service and Web site where she posts photographs of lost-and-found pets.

"I soon realized there are people wanting to adopt pets. So I now list homeless pets. The results are rewarding.  Imagine bringing love, joy, and happiness into peoples' lives and helping relieve grief by reuniting people with their lost pet or finding a perfect home for an animal!"

Rachel's Web site also has educational articles on pet safety, pet news, pet training, local pet events, and photographs of the Wiener Dog Races and the All Species Parade.

The radio station KNND directs pet owners to her free services, which include; searching for lost pets, assistance with lost and found posters, posting ads on craigslist for their pet, information on local animal shelters where pets can be found or adopted, and free microchip scans.

If you lose or find a dog or cat, she lists tips for what to do. "I love happy endings and have had many since North Star For Rescued Animals began," says Rachel.

Rachel has spent her life caring for animals in need. "I love animals and want to see them in good homes."  She certainly puts her time where her heart is; she also volunteers for the pet Neuter Scooter.

Imagine awakening each morning wondering what magic you are about to perform for people and their pets and then having the opportunity to watch the events unfold!

When Rachel created North Star Rescue, she may have discovered the most rewarding hobby of all--helping lost-and-found or other pets needing new homes. She can be reached at NorthStarRescue@aol.com or 543-5622.

TIPS

When you find a lost pet, try everything to find its rightful owner.  Pets can grieve for years over the loss of their families, and so can their families.  Report the lost pet to local veterinary clinics, place posters within a mile of your home, especially around schools, because children are likely to notice pets in their area.

The facts are in! Smoking is harmful to your pets.  Second hand smoke enters their lungs as easily as it does  humans'.

Tufts University reports, "Cats living with smokers are twice as likely to develop malignant lymphoma, the most common cancer in cats."  The study explains  that cats constantly groom, and this causes them to ingest hazardous amounts of carcinogens.

A 1998 Colorado University study explains that dogs living in homes with smokers have a higher risk of developing nasal tumors and cancer of the sinus. The American Journal of Epidemiology reports that dogs living in smoking households have a 60 percent higher chance of developing lung cancer.

Apparently the only puffing that should be done around your pets is when you take them for long walk up hills!
