UPDATE
from Cyndi in Arkansas

I'm involved with an animal shelter and often go on the spay/neuter runs up to Hot Springs.

When I received information about the ketamine recall I checked with the three of our vet clinics and none were aware of the recall.

I was concerned because we recently lost three female cats/kittens after being spayed - who required a longer 'out' time.  I wish more vet clinics were aware of this alert. I was shocked that most did not have a clue!

Dearest Pet Guardians,

The above email arrived after the Injectable vet. drug alert went out.  Bless the woman's heart for taking the time to alert her local vet clinics.  We can all play a part in the protection of animals as this lady was.  My part is alerting you, yours is sharing the information.  Thank you.

Injectable Veterinary Drug Alert
Forward onto friends and neighbors to protect their pets.

RECALL of Injectable Veterinary Drug - If you have dogs needing surgery or other procedure where the vet wants to anesthetize your pup, beaware of this recent recall. Below are the relevant links, and part of their articles for more complete information.
http://www.american humane.org/protecting- animals/veterinary-drug-recalled.html

Protecting Animals A commonly used injectable veterinary drug manufactured by Teva Animal Health, Inc. -- ketamine hydrochloride -- has been recalled. The original ketamine hydrochloride recall has been expanded to include ketamine manufactured by Teva but sold under a wide range of other barnd and product names.

A second commonly used injectable veterinary drug calledbutophanol is reportedly being recalled as well, but no details have been publicly announced.

Due to the LACK of widespread knowledge about the recalls, concerned pet owners and shelter workers -- and especially those whose pets may be undergoing any type of surgical procedure -- should speak with their veterinarian to ensure that she or he is aware of the recalls, and is not using any of the recalled drugs.

Ketamine hydrochloride is an injectable anesthetic agent commonly used for surgical anesthesia in veterinary clinics and animal shelters. Butorphanol is an injectable opiate used to control pain from surgical procedures in dogs and cats. "Ketamine is part of a "cocktail" of drugs that induces anesthesia in animals, including dogs and cats. It can be used, usually with valium, prior to surgery, a dental cleaning and sometimes as a form of restraint for procedures such as an imaging scan. It's not the only drug that can be used in this way, but it's one of the most common."
